O IS FOR ORGANIC: HOW TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ORGANIC MEANS

“You are what you eat,” is a sentiment that has never felt truer. With the organic movement taking grocery stores and refrigerators by storm, more and more people are finding joy in understanding what they’re putting into their body and why. However, just because a label says it’s organic, it may not mean what you think. To help you better understand the organic food you are buying before you put it into your mouth, we have created a brief guide. Read on to learn more.

NATURAL DOESN’T MEAN ORGANIC

One of the biggest misconceptions that people have is that all-natural means organic. However, that simply is not the case. In fact, the term “all natural” is often used as a marketing term, but it doesn’t have any organic stamp of approval. The next time you’re at the grocery store, try to stick to certified organic foods rather than all natural ones.

READ THE LABELS

One of the best things you can do as a consumer is to read food labels before you buy them— even if it has an organic label on the front. For instance, food can still be considered as a certified organic product from the FDA but still contain ingredients like pectin, carbon dioxide, and ascorbic acid. So, before you reach for that box of organic cereal or crackers, make sure that you can understand what the ingredients are and what they mean.

ORGANIC DOESN’T MEAN HEALTHY

An organic cookie may be rid of certain preservatives and saturated fats, but it still is a cookie. Remember that although you can feel more confident when eating organic foods, it doesn’t mean they are healthy.

Walking through the aisles of the grocery store these days can be beyond overwhelming. You can choose between generic brands, name brands, organic, and all-natural. However, by understanding a little more about organic foods, you can feel more confident in what you are eating.
